What is Crypto Currency?
Crypto currency, also known as digital currency, is a type of currency that exists entirely online. Unlike traditional currency, which is controlled by governments and financial institutions, crypto currency is decentralized and operates on a peer-to-peer network.
The most well-known form of crypto currency is Bitcoin, which was created in 2009 by an anonymous individual or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto. Since then, numerous other crypto currencies have emerged, including Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple.
What distinguishes crypto currency from traditional currency is its underlying technology: the blockchain. The blockchain is a decentralized ledger that records all transactions made with a particular crypto currency. Transactions are verified and stored on the blockchain through a process called mining.
Crypto currency can be used to buy goods and services, just like traditional currency. However, it also has unique properties that make it attractive to investors and traders. For example, some crypto currencies have a limited supply, which can make them more valuable over time.
The Rise of Bitcoin and Ethereum
Bitcoin and Ethereum are two of the most popular and valuable crypto currencies available in the market. Their inception has revolutionized the world of digital currency and has seen a significant increase in their value over the years.
Bitcoin is the first and most well-known crypto currency, introduced in 2009 by an unknown person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto. Its success prompted the creation of other digital currencies and helped establish the concept of blockchain technology.
Ethereum, on the other hand, was introduced in 2015 by Vitalik Buterin. It stands out from Bitcoin for its focus on smart contracts, which allow for more complex transactions beyond currency exchange.
| Currency | Year Introduced | Founder |
|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 2009 | Satoshi Nakamoto |
| Ethereum | 2015 | Vitalik Buterin |
Both Bitcoin and Ethereum have a limited supply and rely on the blockchain technology to ensure the integrity of transactions. Bitcoin has a maximum supply of 21 million coins, and its current circulating supply is around 18.6 million. Ethereum, on the other hand, has no hard cap on its total supply but follows a similar issuance rate as Bitcoin, reducing block rewards over time.
The value of both Bitcoin and Ethereum is subject to market demand, and their price can fluctuate widely. Bitcoin's value has seen significant growth over the years, with its price reaching an all-time high of over $64,000 in April 2021. Ethereum has also seen a strong market performance, with its value reaching an all-time high of over $4,300 in May 2021.
Both Bitcoin and Ethereum have a significant impact on the crypto currency market. Their popularity and success have prompted the creation of numerous other digital currencies and blockchain-based projects.
